Cairo Water Week 2021
Agriculture, which consumes already more than 70 percent of available fresh water resources at global level and more than 85% in the Near East and North Africa Region, face strong challenges in keeping its same water allocation with growing competition on water but this puts at risks its capacity to sustain food security and rural economy. Climate change impacts and fast global changes add to the complexity. Countries with high water demands need to plan strategically their water resources allocation, review their water, food security and energy strategies to ensure that they are aligned with the imperative of making the best use of each single drop of water.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is participating in Cairo Water Week 2021 taking place from the 24th to 28th of October 2021. It will bring in evidences from science and the field with Its NENA regional water scarcity initiative (WSI), a regional partnership gathering key water stakeholders in the Near East and North Africa region. The conference aims at connecting water organizations and wider water sector industries, regional interests, and communities concerned with the broad topic of water and sustainable development. FAO is organizing and participating in numerous events, during Cairo Water Week, summarized in the table below.
