More effective and sustainable investments in water for poverty reduction

Needs assessment

The most relevant agricultural water management technologies for poverty reduction that have been identified in the needs assessment as being currently used in Mali, are the following:

  • Pumping technologies: A method which uses a motor to draw water from an available water source, whether it can be a river, a reservoir, a pond, a canal or from groundwater. It can be fuelled by various types of energy including fuel, electricity or solar power.
  • Shallow and deep wells: Shallow and deep wells were also found very important for the development of vegetable gardens.
  • Rainwater harvesting: Method which captures rainwater and stores it as surface water.

The most relevant cross-cutting priorities of intervention which have been identified are: capacity development, enhancement of dialogue platforms with institutions to promote accessibility to agricultural water management equipment, project and program design and research.
