More effective and sustainable investments in water for poverty reduction

Needs assessment

The most relevant agricultural water management technologies for poverty reduction that are currently being used in the country and that were identified in the needs assessment are the following:

  • River Diversion schemes: Temporary or semi-permanent dams and earthen canals that divert surface water from rivers for agriculture.
  • Soil and water conservation and rainwater harvesting: A method which captures rainwater and stores it as surface water. In particular this refers to terracing practices that are coupled with lined or earthen runoff harvesting ponds.
  • Pumping technologies: A method which uses a motor to draw water from an available water source, whether it can be a river, a reservoir, a pond, a canal or from groundwater. It can be fuelled by various types of energy including fuel, electricity or solar power.

The main cross-cutting priority highlighted is the necessity to further build and strengthen capacities on agricultural water management.
