Veterinary treatment guidelines and disease prioritization strategy for India

08/04/2024

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) met the Animal Husbandry Commissioner of India (AHC), Dr Abhijit Mitra to formulate a comprehensive standard veterinary treatment guideline tailored for India. The consensus was to structure these guidelines either by system or by species, leading to the proposal of four committees: the core committee, drafting committee, expert committee, and review committee.

During the meeting, Dr Mitra emphasized the importance of including a diverse range of experts from civil society, private practitioners, the Indian Veterinary Association, the Veterinary Council of India, and the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences, among others. With the guidance received from subject experts at the FAO Regional Office for the Asia Pacific, the FAO Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD) India team briefed Dr Mitra on the progress of the animal disease prioritization document, including its methodology, and the constitution of four distinct committees: the core committee, facilitators, voting members, and advisors to look into its development.

Additionally, a draft structure, for the In-Service Applied Veterinary Epidemiology Training (ISAVET) was presented and has been further shared with the National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics (NIVEDI) for their review and feedback, following which the suggestions from AHC will be incorporated.
