Food Heroes Festival to appreciate farmers, fishers in October

03/10/2020

The COVID-19 global health crisis has been a time to reflect on things we truly cherish and our most basic needs. These uncertain times have made many of us rekindle our appreciation for a thing that some take for granted and many go without: food. Food is the essence of life and the bedrock of our cultures and communities.  Preserving access to safe and nutritious food is and will continue to be an essential part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a moment like this, it is more important than ever to recognise the need to support our food heroes - farmers and workers throughout the food system, including urban community activators that encourage people in cities to care about food and agriculture production and consumption especially during the pandemic.  Food Heroes acts are including simple actions that can be done by everyone by doing simple such as appreciate food, buy local product, backyard farming and avoid food waste.

To highlight their works and welcoming the World Food Day that fall on October 16, FAO Indonesia is conducting series of digital events , including:

  • Social Media Giveaway: You can be a food Hero too! A Social media competition where social media users are requested to publish their photo and story  about action showing Food Hero action. The photo are published with hastaghs:  #WorldFoodDay #HariPanganSedunia #FoodHeroes.
  • Virtual exhibition to showcase food heroes in FAO projects in Indonesia
  • Global Poster Contest: A traditional poster contest that has been held every year to celebrate World Food Day.  Indonesian children are among the world winners since 2015.
  •  Food Hero Day : A virtual workshop and talkshow about Food Heroes in Indonesia.
