17/10/2015

Palembang.- Today, we celebrate the World Food Day 2015 and the 70 years of FAO. To mark the occasion, FAO Indonesia has published a set of eight (8) postage stamps and a First Day Cover produced in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and the Indonesia Post Office.  All stamps are associated with FAO projects. The First Day Cover was signed by the Vice President of Indonesia.

FAO is commemorating 70 years of worldwide action towards the eradication of poverty, hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition while supporting the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources.

Indonesia became a member of FAO in 1948 and established the FAO representation in 1979. By now, over 650 programmes and projects have been implemented by FAO throughout Indonesia.  FAO has been working with governments and non-state actors to tackle the causes of hunger to improve food and nutrition security and support sustainable agricultural development around the world.

FAO has persistently highlighted to the world that development of food and agriculture is central to human development. During the World Food Crisis in 2007-2008, countries realized that agricultural sector is fundamental for the economic development. Agriculture, until today, is an important engine for growth.

The declaration in 1943 by the 40 founding nations states mentions "the goal of freedom from want of food, suitable and adequate for health and strength to all peoples, can be achieved, " is still a huge challenge for the world, especially in the developing countries. Around 800 million people are still undernourished today, and 20 million of them live in Indonesia.
