Celebrating the biodiversity of the Nilgiris of South India

In light of International Mountain Day, the Nilgiri Documentation Centre is celebrating the biodiversity of the Niligiris, including the Shola forests and trees, grasslands, wetlands, sacred groves, indigenous plant species, sacred cultural locations and species and medicinal plants, along with the rivers, streams, springs, lakes and other water bodies.

16th INKAFEST Mountain Film Festival opens 7 December

The 16th INKAFEST Mountain Film Festival will take place online on 7–12 December. INKAFEST provides a forum for exchanging ideas among moviemakers, sports lovers and the general public. At the same time, it provides a supportive showcase for creative and effective ways to spread the word about the world of mountains. INKAFEST highlights the importance of protecting and conserving our environment, mountain systems and nature in the modern world.

National Institute of Agronomy of Toulouse to host webinar on IMD

The National Institute of Agronomy of Toulouse will host a webinar on 11 December at 18.00–20.00 CET dedicated to "Les montagnes: des trésors naturels à préserver" (Mountains: natural treasures to be preserved). The webinar aims to raise awareness about the threats facing mountains as well as the major role mountains and their forests play in preserving biodiversity and providing important ecosystem services such as climate regulation.

Global Himalayan Expedition to receive UN Global Climate Action Award 2020 on IMD

UN Climate Change will organize a special online award ceremony to celebrate and recognize the 13 winners of the 2020 UN Global Climate Action Awards, including the Global Hiamlayan Expedition of the Mountain Partnership, on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Agreement. The 11th of December is also the observance of International Mountain Day.

Carnaval por las Montañas celebrates IMD virtually from Peru

The Carnaval por las Montañas will celebrate International Mountain Day virtually from Lima, Peru, on 11 December from 14.30–21.00. Organized by Illariy, OIKOS and Inkafest, the event will feature a section for children, a technical session, presentations of projects and a movie screening and music.

8th Eastern Himalayan Naturenomics Forum opens

COVID-19 and nature degradation are interlinked, and recovery plans must take this into consideration. In dealing with the current economic fallout, a green recovery plan supporting sustainable growth is needed. On 1-5 December, the 8th Eastern Himalayan Naturenomics Forum "Rural Futures: Ecology is Economy," organized by the Balipara Foundation, aims to develop the Green Recovery Plan for the Eastern Himalayas for boosting economic growth, creating jobs and building a resilient future.

Utah International Mountain Forum to hold 11th IMD celebration

The Utah International Mountain Forum, in collaboration with the Utah Valley University (UVU) Office of Global Engagement and Orem Rotary Club, will host its 11th International Mountain Day celebration at UVU on 2 December at 12.00 MST. The observation will also commemorate the United Nations’ 75th anniversary and will be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/UtahInternationalMountainForum.

Russian Geographical Society will discuss the development and protection of mountain territories

The Russian Geographical Society will conduct a webinar in observance of International Mountain Day 2020. The theme of the webinar will be "Mountainous territories of the CIS countries and Russia: Development and protection".

9th Sustainable Mountain Development Summit coincides with IMD

To be held on 8–14 December 2020, the ninth edition of the Sustainable Mountain Development Summit, hosted by Sustainable Development Forum Uttaranchal, will focus on the overall objective of building pathways toward a resilient and sustainable mountain economy in the Indian Himlayan Region in the context of a post COVID-19 scenario and climate change.
