ICENECDEV celebrates IMD 2018

The International Centre for Environmental Education and Community Development (ICENECDEV) in collaboration with 10 local partners and 100 students from the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Buea in Cameroon celebrated IMD by by raising awareness of mountain resources to sustainable livelihoods.

UNA-USA and UVU celebrate IMD 2018

Utah Valley University (UVU) celebrated IMD 2018 this past December by attending several events including the "Tackling Climate Change and Building Resilience for Mountain and Rural Communities" side event at the United Nations in New York. The United Nations Association of the United States (UNA-USA) posted a piece about their collaboration with the Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF) to raise awareness about mountain targets in North America.  Photo by Samuel Elzinga

Virunga Wildlife Clubs celebrates IMD 2018

Virunga Wildlife Clubs organized an awareness campaign to promote environmental information in more than 356 schools. Additionally, to raise awareness for the "MountainsMatter" theme, conferences, workshops, mountain climbing and exhibitions were organized. 

Iran celebrates International Mountain Day

The Mountain Environment Protection Society (MEPS) celebrated International Mountain Day (IMD) in Tehran, Iran.  A "High Mountains in Drylands" conference was organized where various governmental organizations discussed mountain related activities. In the Alborz province, Hashtgerd, approximately 100 participants gathered to watch several performances with traditional costumes and music. 

Sri Lanka celebrates IMD 2018

For the ninth consecutive year, Prabhawa, an environmental organization organized an event in Haputale, Sri Lanka to celebrate International Mountain Day. Sampath Lamahewa, the mayor awarded Prabhawa for its dedicated contribution on environmental conservation activities. Over 100 participants attended the event.

IMD 2018 celebrations in Germany

An event was organized by the Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus and the ‘Landratsamt Garmisch-Partenkirchen’ to celebrate IMD 2018 in Germany. The theme for the event was 'Mountains Matter for water'. The event started with a discussion round of local authorities and natural scientists, afterwards Prof. Dr. Michael Rast from the European Space Agency had an excellent speech about the retreat of the alpine glaciers as observed from space. The Federal Institute for Less-favoured and Mountainous areas celebrates IMD in Vienna

The Federal Institute for Less-Favoured and Mountainous Areas in Vienna, Austria, celebrated International Mountain Day by organizing a reading event with author El Awadalla. The event, titled “descent” (in German: “abstieg”), was organized as part of the "Reading Mountains" festival of the Alpine Convention. Around 30 people participated in the event. 

Utah International Mountain Forum celebrates IMD

Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at Utah Valley University (UVU) promoted the IMD 2018 theme, #MountainsMatter by attending three ECOSOC forums on the UN 2030 Agenda this year. Additionally, Samuel Elzinga and Andrew Jensen, UIMF leaders spoke at the panel titled, "Tackling climate change and building resilience in mountainous and rural communties," at the United Nations in New York, USA. CHINAR organizes community IMD celebration

CHINAR celebrated IMD in Bageshwar, Uttarakhand with school children and the community. A seminar was also organized to discuss responsible tourism, enterprise development, the promotion of energy efficient stoves and the impact of climate change and adaptation.
