Schools and organizations in Cameroon observe IMD

The International Center for Environmental Education and Community Development (ICENECDEV) celebrated International Mountain Day on 5-8 December in Cameroon. Posters and fact sheets were distributed in 100 schools, offices and organizations, and radio and television programmes discussed the importance of mountains. The aim of their activities was to increase communities' knowledge and awareness of mountain resources and their importance to sustainable livelihoods, and to establish a network for future IMD celebrations.

Celebrating IMD in Mount Dajti National Park, Albania

The PSEDA-ILIRIA Organization celebrated International Mountain Day on 11 December 2017 in close cooperation with the Regional Administration of Protected Areas and the college “The Independent” in Tirana, Albania. Volunteers helped plant trees and collect waste in Mount Dajti National Park. Students were furthermore able to learn about the national park’s administration and find out what environmental challenges the park is facing and how everyone can contribute to sustainable development.

WWF Nepal highlighted the snow leopard on IMD

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Nepal celebrated International Mountain Day by sharing knowledge and information about WWF Nepal and its conservation efforts in mountains at the Budhanilkantha School in Kathmandu, Nepal. A presentation on the snow leopard, a key flagship species, was made, focusing on youth, communities and programmes in the mountains. 

Planting trees for IMD in Alaquàs, Spain

The City Council of Alaquàs, Spain organized two activities in celebration of International Mountain Day 2017. To increase environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices among citizens, Alaquàs held a round table discussion on 5 December. Speakers included Laura Prieto Estévez, head of the Centre for Forest Genetic Resources of Alaquàs, and Eduardo Rojas, Dean of the Colegio de Ingenieros de Montes. The round table event was followed by a community tree planting ceremony on 16 December.

Message of the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity on the occasion of IMD

In celebration of International Mountain Day 2017, the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Dr Cristiana Paşca Palmer, shared a message on the importance of mountains and on the challenges that mountain ecosystems and the people that inhabit them face in a world of changing climate.

Celebrating mountain geodiversity and geoheritage on IMD

The Department of Geography at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, together with the Croatian Geomorphological Society, celebrated International Mountain Day on 11 December 2017. A lecture was held on "Velebit - Geological Museum of the Karstic Dinarides”, with presentations by Ivo Velić and Josip Velić, researchers and the authors of several geological guides. The forum concentrated on mountain geodiversity and geoheritage in light of climatic change.

IMD 2017 celebrated at United Nations headquarters

International Mountain Day was celebrated at United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York on 11 December. While maintaining the focus on addressing the challenges and opportunities of sustainable mountain development, the event drew particular attention to climate change and food security as two of the challenges that mountains and the people depending directly on them are facing today, and in particular their impact on women. The Permanent Representatives of Austria, Kyrgyzstan and Peru to the UN made the opening remarks. [...]

A mountain reading in Vienna, Austria for IMD

On 11 December, the Federal Institute for Less-Favoured and Mountainous Areas in Vienna, Austria celebrated International Mountain Day with a reading by author Dimitré Dinev. The event was organized within the framework of the Alpine Convention’s Reading Mountains Festival, an occasion for partners around the Alps to organize events to celebrate Alpine literature, languages and cultures. More than 50 people participated in the reading. The celebration ended with a buffet of organic food.

Three municipalities in Spain celebrate IMD together

International Mountain Day (IMD) was celebrated in Moraira, Teulada and Vall de Laguar, Spain. On 5 December, a presentation on IMD was held in Teulada’s townhall with the participation of Eduardo Rojas, Dean, Colegio de Ingenieros de Montes. On 9 December, the Radio Club Montgó of Vall de Laguar dedicated its programming to IMD. That evening, Moraira hosted a conference with alpinist Carlos Soria and inaugurated the photo exhibition “Mountains under pressure”. On 10 December, hikers summited “Cavall Verd”. 

National park in Jamaica celebrating IMD and 25th anniversary

The Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park in Jamaica is celebrating International Mountain Day 2017. On 9 December, the park guided reggae artists and radio hosts on a hike to the peak of Blue Mountain to raise awareness of the importance of mountains; on 11 December, the park will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a press conference; and on 17 December, the park will host a family day in its main recreation area.
