Mountaineering organization planning a mountain festival in India

Giripremi, a, India-based mountaineering organization, will celebrate International Mountain Day (IMD) by organizing a ten-day mountain festival in Pune, India on 2-11 December 2017. The festival will raise awareness on the 2017 IMD theme “Mountains under Pressure: climate, hunger, migration”. The programme comprises seminars, treks, a mountain film festival and photography competition, a mountain quiz and digital promotion on electronic media, radio channels and social media. Guest experts will share their experiences on mountains from their respective fields.

Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh organizes fifth annual IMD celebration

For the fifth consecutive year, the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs of Bangladesh will celebrate International Mountain Day in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, United States Agency for International Development, United Nations Development Programme, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Bangladesh Adventure Club and other organizations. The activities, comprising a rally, seminars, posters, newspaper articles and five-day mountain fair, will take place in Dhaka and the three Hill districts.

ICIMOD launches two photo competitions for IMD

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) launched a photo and photo story competition on ‘Capturing change across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH)’ for International Mountain Day (IMD) to bring attention to how climate, hunger and migration are affecting the HKH and inspire action to include sustainable mountain development in national and global agendas. Hiking group carries IMD flag to 100-year-old walnut tree

As part of a series of activities organized in celebration of International Mountain Day (IMD) 2017, the Real Casino de Murcia hiking group carried the IMD flag with them on 4 November as they hiked to a 100-year-old walnut tree, called "Plantón del Cobacho", in the mountains near Nerpio, Albacete, Spain. Utah Valley University to host seventh annual IMD celebration

On 4 December 2017, the Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Utah, United States, will celebrate International Mountain Day (IMD) under the 2017 theme “Mountains under pressure: climate, hunger, migration”. The CIO and Vice-Rector for Global Engagement at UVU, Dr Baldomero Lago, will be the keynote speaker and will discuss in particular the new linkage between UVU and the United Nations Department of Public Information.

Hiking group climbs to the highest peak in Murica, Spain

On 21 October, the Real Casino de Murcia hiking group climbed to the highest peak in the region of Murcia, Spain in early celebration of International Mountain Day. The group will also host the event “Walking for life, with Antonio Hernandez Castillo” on 11 December at 19.30 in the assembly hall of the Real Casino de Murcia.

Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board sponsoring IMD celebration in remote Indian mountain village

The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board will sponsor the International Mountain Day celebration taking place on 11 December 2017 in the remote mountain village of Liti, India. Here, the Central Himalayan Institute for Nature and Applied Research is organizing a regional fair to showcase the cultural and biological diversity of the region, along with its handicrafts, agricultural diversity and prospects for developing tourism. The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board will declare the area ‘Trek of The Year 2018’ during the celebration.

Canadian Mountain Network facilitates IMD celebrations across Canada

The Canadian Mountain Network will join mountain communities around the world in celebrating the rich cultures and unique environments found in mountain landscapes by facilitating International Mountain Day (IMD) celebrations across Canada. Through its 2017 University of Alberta Mountain Festival (4-11 December), which will include events such as a keynote presentation from anthropologist and ethnobotanist Wade Davis and an IMD live stream, the Canadian Mountain Network will celebrate mountain cultures, regions and research, bringing together mountain communities for IMD.

Students seek solutions to climate impacts in mountain communities

High school students hosted the first Utah Youth Environmental Summit on 15-16 September 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The summit was held to discuss how climate change is affecting local communities in the mountainous state of Utah. Students Piper Christian and Elizabeth Hansen of Logan High School organized the event to create a state-wide environmental youth network. The students have been invited to Utah Valley University’s celebration of International Mountain Day on 4 December.

Students in Argentina celebrate IMD with art and poetry

On 2 October, Bibiana Vilá of VICAM and elementary school teacher Porfirio Alanoca organized a day-long workshop with students in Santa Catalina, Jujuy, Argentina to celebrate International Mountain Day. In the morning, the students with their instructors climbed a nearby hill to observe their town in its mountainous surroundings and learn about the local mountain chains. Back in the classroom, the students were taught the importance of mountains. They drew pictures and wrote poetry to express the lessons they had learned. [...]
