Eleventh annual International Mountain Day observance at Utah Valley University

The Utah International Mountain Forum at Utah Valley University hosted its eleventh International Mountain Day observance on 2 December. Keynote speaker Dustin Liu, Youth Observer to the UN from the UN Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA), spoke on biodiversity globally and in mountains. The event was co-sponsored by UNA-USA as well as the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and Utah China Friendship Improvement Sharing Hands Development and Cooperation.

International Mountain Day 2020 in the Nilgiri mountains

International Mountain Day 2020 in the Nilgiri mountains was a grand success. Local TV station "Nakkubetta" ran a one-week programme, ending with a prayer offering to the mountains. People from most of the 350 villages where the Badaga people live participated. Furthermore, the Abishaikh Gender and Development Association together with the Department of Horticulture of the Nilgiris organized a tree planting ceremony, and the OISCA International South India Chapter conducted a webinar on mountain ecology on 11 December.

Brazilian mountain forum concludes on IMD

The Forum for the Sustainable Development of Brazilian Mountain Environments concluded on 11 December, International Mountain Day, with the announcement of the first International Meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Network for Research and Innovation in Mountain Environments (LACMON), to be held on 11-13 May 2021.

Moroccan Mountain Coalition celebrates IMD 2020

On the occasion of International Mountain Day 2020, the Moroccan Mountain Coalition organized several activities through its local branches and the national secretariat, including the distribution of 300 furnaces in a mountain village in Sefrou Province. The coalition also organized a webinar on mountain biodiversity. Furthermore, Mohamed Dich, the national coordinator of the Coalition, gave three radio interviews on private, regional and national stations.

Romania celebrates IMD at national level

Organized by the Mountain Economy Center of the Romanian Academy "CEMONT," the National Mountain Area Agency, the Romanian Mountain Forum and the National Agency for Mountain Rural Development ”ROMONTANA," a virtual seminar on "Mountain biodiversity, invaluable heritage of the mountain area: threats, vulnerabilities and perspectives in the context of climate change, extreme weather and globalization” was held on 11 December. Over 100 participants tuned in to the broadcast.

University students share stories of mountain action

On 11 December, the Center for Mountain Transitions at Western Colorado University welcomed students from seven global universities to share stories of mountain action. The virtual session was followed by a discussion of the UNESCO Zero Water Day Partnership. Festivities concluded with the presentation of the 2020 Mountain Leader of the Year award and an online toast.

Painting and education: UNESCO Club of Serres celebrates IMD

The UNESCO Club of Serres, Greece, celebrated International Mountain Day with an educational programme on mountains and biodiversity. The event included an online presentation of the topic followed by mountain painting.

Mountains and cloud forests matter

In celebration of International Mountain Day and the 2020 theme "Mountain Biodiversity Matters," the Forest and Water Programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations shared an article on Tropical Montane Cloud Forests, which are rare ecosystems that are important for water security and biodiversity.

Italian mountain communities call for action on IMD

The challenges and needs of Italy's mountain territories are the challenges and opportunities of the entire country, said the Italian National Organization of Mountain Municipalities, Communities and Bodies (UNCEM) on International Mountain Day. In a press release, the presidents of the regional UNCEM chapters underlined the pressures facing their mountain territories and the actions required for their sustainable development.

UNEP launches a virtual journey through four iconic mountain ecosystems

The United Nations Environment Programme, its Wild for Life campaign, and its Vanishing Treasures programme launched a virtual journey across four mountain regions on 11 December. Learn about conservation efforts to maintain the Tien Shan mountains in northern China; the Virunga mountains in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda; the “third pole” Hindu Kush Himalaya mountain region in south-central Asia; and Europe’s Carpathian mountains.
