International Mountain Day was celebrated at United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York on 11 December. While maintaining the focus on addressing the challenges and opportunities of sustainable mountain development, the event drew particular attention to climate change and food security as two of the challenges that mountains and the people depending directly on them are facing today, and in particular their impact on women. The Permanent Representatives of Austria, Kyrgyzstan and Peru to the UN made the opening remarks.
