Given that large areas in this region are co-governed by traditional authorities through customary land tenure, there is a clear need to actively engage with local traditional structures. Therefore, we will be hosting this high-level Royal Mountain Lekgotla/Indaba (“meeting”), for Royal Houses with jurisdiction over strategic water source areas in southern Africa. Such traditional structures have been embedded in the social-cultural-political landscape much longer than democratic ones; accordingly, the esteem in which they are held by local communities may open the doors for sustainable solutions at a grassroots level quicker than through conventional government structures.
