The Agricultural Stress Index System (ASIS) was established for the Urmia Lake Basin

16/05/2022

In 2021, FAO developed the Agricultural Stress Index System to assist countries in monitoring agricultural drought and managing its risk. This tool uses satellite data to detect agricultural areas where drought has affected crops. ASIS simulates the analysis by a remote sensing expert and simplifies the results in the form of maps for end-users. Throughout a Capacity Development process, ASIS was established for the Urmia Lake Basin by national experts with the technical support of FAO experts. ASIS assists Urmia Lake Restoration Program in strengthening its agricultural drought monitoring and early warning systems. The tool is satellite data calibrated with field information providing a more accurate result regarding the water stress periods for different crops and their impact on crop yield. ASIS can monitor the crop-specific areas during the crop cycle, detecting water stress and forecasting drought – which can produce a production reduction – two months ahead.
