Mexico seeks to align national platforms with FAO tools to combat IUU fishing

09/01/2025

Experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) participated in a technical mission in Mexico, which focused on information exchange within the framework of the implementation of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

As a Party to the PSMA, Mexico expressed interest in aligning its national platforms with international tools such as the FAO Global Record and the PSMA Global Information Exchange System (GIES), to improve the effectiveness of its port State measures.

The mission, held in Mexico City in December 2024, had the main objective of identifying technological options to automate the exchange of data on inspections and denials of entry to foreign vessels using Mexican designated ports. This included the analysis of existing national systems, the adoption of international standards for participation in the PSMA GIES.

The mission brought together various national institutions to coordinate their responsibilities in the implementation of the PSMA. Additionally, FAO experts conducted technical visits to main Mexican agencies to support them in assessing current standards and mechanisms being used and propose efficient solutions to update the country’s data on the international fishing fleet and inspections of foreign vessels.

Support to Mexico was provided under a project funded by the European Union.
