Leaflet: The FAO Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

01/07/2016 FAO

This leaflet provides a background to the Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA), the benefits, FAO capacity building efforts and the process to become party to the PSMA. Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing is a major problem in capture fisheries and poses a serious threat to the effective conservation and management of many fish stocks. The main objective of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) is to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing by preventing vessels engaged in IUU fishing from using ports and landing their catches, thereby reducing the incentive of such vessels to continue to operate and blocking fishery products derived from IUU fishing from reaching national and international markets.
