Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing

Checklists and Technical Guidelines to combat IUU fishing

International fisheries instruments adopted over the past three decades define responsibilities of flag, port, coastal and market States to achieve sustainable fisheries and to prevent, deter, and eliminate IUU fishing.

Under its global programme in support of the implementation of the PSMA and complementary international instruments and tools, FAO delivers technical assistance to support States in improving their capacities to fulfil these responsibilities. Such support focusses on policy and legislation, institutional setup and inter-agency coordination, monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS), enforcement and operational procedures. The technical assistance is complemented by a comprehensive training programme.

Under the global programme, FAO has produced a series of publications, Checklists and Technical Guidelines to combat IUU fishing, providing professionals, practitioners and national authorities with reference documents to facilitate needs assessments and reviews of national capacities to combat IUU fishing.
