Belize celebrated its first World Soil Day with a Ceremony and the launch of a video on Soil in Belize, followed by a Webinar featuring institutions that have invested in soil testing programmes.

To launch and commemorate the first World Soil Day in Belize, The Research and Innovation Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprize supported by FAO, The National Food and Nutrition Security Commission and with the Sugar Industry Research & Development Institute (SIRDI) held a small ceremony on December 4, 2020.

The ceremony featured messages from the Chief Agriculture Officer, Mr Andrew Harrison and FAO Representative Dr Crispim Moreira. The ceremony was followed by a Webinar on Soil analyses and the importance of science and technology in protecting soil biodiversity with representatives from SIRDI, Biochar and the Banana Growers Association. All the three presenters shared their experiences from their investments in Soil Testing Programmes in Belize.

A 5-minute video entitled "Soil in Belize" was produced. The video highlights the legislative and Government interventions on promoting soil policy and practices in Belize. It shares the approach and story of the Sugar Industry Research & Development Institute (SIRDI) which launched a massive soil testing campaign and the results after 5 years with one farmer who has used the data to make important decisions for his planting and production.
