On World Food Day and in celebration of FAO's 75th Anniversary, virtual celebrations were in full swing in Jamaica, the Bahamas and Belize. 

A week of virtual activities swarmed across Jamaica, the Bahamas and Belize, with virtual national ceremonies, videos highlighting local food heroes, webinars and a cooking show. Under the theme: Grow. Nourish. Sustain. Together. Our Actions are Our Future, the countries held weeklong celebrations and ended on a high with a regional Webinar on Harnessing Public-Private Partnerships to drive resilient agriculture and agribusiness in the Caribbean post-COVID-19: Experiences, successes and lessons learnt from the Jamaican ginger sector. 

Here are some highlights: 

 JAMAICA 

Virtual National Ceremony

In Jamaica, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in partnership with FAO held a virtual national ceremony. Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Floyd Green delieverd the keynote address with opening remarks delivered by FAO Representative Dr Crispim Moreira. 

Cooking to Reduce Food Waste

Foodie and Dad, Garth Williams joined FAO Jamaica to prepare some delicious dishes live on line. In case you missed it and want to try this delicious meal, vegan or non-vegan style, watch here

Newspaper: The Jamaica Gleaner and the Jamaica Observer carried two newspaper supplments with messages from across Jamaica and showcasing Jamaica's agriculture sector.  

Radio: On Agro Buzz on Radio Jamaica Hon Floyd Green delivered a special World Food Day talk. 

Television: Broadcasts of the FAO Director General’s WFD Message and other WFD Videos were aired on the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica TV station

Food Heroes Video: A Food Heroes video was published by FAO in collaboration with Foodie and Dad Garth Williams. Please see the video here

BELIZE 

Launch of WFD

In Belize, the launch of World Food Day was broadcasted via the radio station, LOVE FM. FAO National Correspondent, Armando Aban spoke about the national events in Belize. For more, please visit here (Starts at 1:13:46)

Virtual National Ceremony

A virtual national ceremony was held in recognition of the day in collaboration with FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Immigration. Opening remarks were delivered by FAO Representative Dr Crispim Moreira along with remarks by the PAHO Representative, Belize Chief Agriculture Officer and the Belize Director of Health Services. During the ceremony winners of the Belize World Food Day Poster Competition were announced and the Belize Food heroes video was premiered.

Webinar

A webinar was held in celebration of WFD. The panelists included FAO, the Belize Ministry of Education (National School Garden Initiative), OIRSA (International Year of Plant Health), UNICEF (Nutrition Education), and INCAP (Micronutrients). The webinar may be viewed here

Distribution of seedlings

For World Food Day, the Ministry also delivered seedlings to over 750 families affected by COVID-19 in Belmopan, Belize City and Orange Walk. Highlights from this activity may be found here.

 

 THE BAHAMAS

Newspaper

In the Bahamas, the Nassau Guardian and The Tribune carried World Food Day Supplements. The supplement for the Tribune may be found here

Television

Thanks to a collaboration between ZNS TV Bahamas, the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources and FAO, two PSAs highlighting local food hereos were broadcasted all weeklong in The Bahamas. The PSAs can be found here. (Starting at time 3:20 and at 37:46)
