World Food Day celebrations in Jamaica, the Bahamas and Belize

The governments of Jamaica, the Bahamas and Belize joined FAO in celebrating World Food Day with various activities. This year’s World Food Day was celebrated under the theme ‘Our Actions are our future ─ better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life.’

In Belize, a hybrid national ceremony was convened with the presence of various partners at the Yo Creek Agriculture Station and others joining virtually. FAO Representative Dr Crispim Moreira delivered remarks on behalf of FAO. Prime Minister John Briceño and H.E. Rossana Briceño, Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children joined the celebration and shared special messages in recognition of the day.

Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Hon. Abelardo Mai also delivered a message and was identified as Belize’s Food Hero for the steps he has taken to promote food security in the country.

The National Ceremony culminated with a tour of booths from various food and agriculture partners in Belize. Plant seedlings were also distributed to community members.  More about this event here.

In the Bahamas, the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Clay Sweeting delivered a World Food Day message that was broadcast on national television. Several World Food Day competitions were also launched in the country including a poster contest, a literary contest and the FAO Tik Tok Dance Challenge.

As a part of the World Food Forum FAO-EU-CIRAD Food Systems Side Event, a video featuring agripreneur, Nicolas Fox from the Bahamas was showcased.

In Jamaica, two newspaper supplements highlighting FAO’s, the Ministry’s and partners’ work in the country to ensure food security were shared in the Jamaica Gleaner and the Jamaica Observer. The FAO Tik Tok Dance challenge was also launched in the country.

Farmer and President of Cascade Farmer’s Group, Mr Derval McLean shared on the panel of the FAO- EU-CIRAD Food Systems Side Event at the World Food Forum (WFF) watch the highlights here. Mr McLean was also included in a FAO Food Systems video for the WFF Side Event as a part of World Food Day activities.
