FAO Representative promotes agribusiness and digital solutions during visit The Bahamas

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative in the Bahamas, Dr. Crispim Moreira is promoting business and digital agriculture solutions as part of the joint national priorities for agriculture. During his mission visit to the country between February 6-10, Dr. Moreira met with key government stakeholders and international partners to further the strategy for technical support and financial assistance to boost agriculture resilience.

In meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs, key considerations for improving the productive capacity and improving efficiency in agriculture value chain such as the integration of more digital solutions for food producers were discussed.

The FAO in collaboration with food and agriculture stakeholders, has been working to increase food security and sustainable rural and agricultural development. The UN organization has been prioritizing capacity building, data-driven consultations, and the leveraging of digital technologies to ensure more resilient and sustainable agri-food systems at the local and national level.

Leading up to the visit, the FAO Team in Bahamas together with national food safety specialists, concluded a 12-month project designed to strengthen the national food control system. In addition to tours in Nassau, The FAO representative connected with local farmers and agriculture stakeholders for the launch of a Digital Village Initiative in Eleuthera.

“As we work to eliminate hunger and ensure food security, we are also concentrating efforts the empowerment of local communities by integrating agribusiness and digital strategies to maximize economic potential”, expressed Dr Moreira.

 

The FAO Representative also completed a series of diplomatic engagements including meetings the with the Ambassador of China and the Ambassador of Brazil to expand the scope of agriculture-related partnerships in The Bahamas.
