The Digital Land Governance Programme (DLGP) was officially unveiled to the Council of Governance (CoG) and the County Executive Committees members (CECM) in charge of Land. This was during a five days consultative meeting with the CoG sector committee on Lands, Housing, and Urban Development that was held in Mombasa County.

The programme is jointly funded European Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations working collaboratively with CoG, Ministry of Lands, National Land Commission and other strategic partners.

FAO unveiled the second phase of the five year - DLGP estimated at EUR 20,848,805.00. During this meeting that brought together partners working towards transformation of the Lands sector in Kenya.

The programme targets all the 47 counties with an overall objective of improved security of tenure and equitable access to land and natural resources for enhancement of livelihoods and sustainable socioeconomic development. The programme envisions improved food and nutrition security, livelihoods and sustainable development in Kenya through equitable and secure access and management of land as outlined in the Vision 2030.

Security of land tenure is at the heart of the development priorities of the Kenyan Government, given that matters of land contribute to the discourse of food and nutrition security. FAO Kenya Representative, Carla Mucavi said that Kenya’s economy is strongly anchored on natural resources and hence the importance of land as a critical factor of production and development. “Improved security of tenure and equitable access to land and natural resources is crucial to the enhancement of livelihoods and sustainable socioeconomic development, by and large to peace and security as well as food and nutrition security’, She said.

Regarding the support by FAO to the government of Kenya in accelerating attainment of sustainable land administration and governance. Hon. Zachariah Njeru Cabinet Secretary, Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development lauded the concerted efforts by all stakeholders involved, highlighting the need for enhanced collaborations. “Urbanization is the best thing that ever happened to our environment in order to realize the much-desired sustainable development”, he said.

Following the successful implementation of the Lands Governance Programme, in collaboration with the CoG, Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development and National Lands Commission, FAO is now implementing the five-year Digital Land Governance Programme. The programme is jointly funded by FAO and the European Union. The National, County Governments and stakeholders are supporting and complimenting various aspects of implementation.

The programme commenced on 1st of April 2022 and will end on 30th March 2027; covering all the 47 counties.
