Prioritization of Irrigation Schemes for Modernization / Rehabilitation (PRISM)

The Prioritization of Irrigation Schemes for Modernization /Rehabilitation (PRISM) tool is a web-based tool developed by the Land and Water Division of FAO to support decision-makers planning and programming irrigation investment, aligned to national priorities, and to guide the development of country’s need and vulnerability assessment.

Through a clear and user-friendly interface and a wide range of highly selected indicators, the PRISM aims at targeting the investment of countries towards the most vulnerable/exposed areas with the highest potential impact of project intervention and to guide a sequenced but still consistent strategy to prioritize irrigation investments.

The applied methodology evaluates irrigated areas defined by the user based on 16 indicators, mainly based on – raw and pre-processed – GIS data, covering aspects of the impacts of investments and factors influencing the potential of irrigation schemes, intersecting the following 4 areas: climate change, environment, society and economy, technology.

Using a composite indicator analysis calculation scheme, indicator values are normalized and combined in a standardized manner and areas are ranked according to their final score. The results are presented on the user interface providing the user insights of the assessment and the option to export the results.

The tool is available as a web application, and publicly available at: https://prism.fao.org/
