WASAG was launched by FAO at COP 22 of the UNFCCC in Marrakesh, Morocco in November 2016.

It's first meeting of partners was held on 20 April 2017, during which the partners adopted “Rome Statement on Water Scarcity in Agriculture”.

WASAG aims to foster strategic collaboration among partners for the development and implementation of policies and programmes for the sustainable use and management of water in agricultural sectors.

The celebratory event has the objective of sharing the achievements to date while reflecting on emerging perspectives.

Among these technologies, solar-power has great potential for rural development through improving access to electricity and water, and can generate additional incomes and new job opportunities. In the framework of the TCP project Renforcement de la gestion des ressources en eau transfrontalières sur le bassin du fleuve Sénégal, and in collaboration with the Organisation pour la mise en valeur du fleuve Sénégal  (OMVS) and the FAO offices of the Senegal River Basin, the FAO Land and Water Division – Water Governance is leading a training from 9 to 12 April 2018 in Conakry, Guinea.

An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day, focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

The theme of each year’s World Water Day is set by UN-Water. This year’s theme is “Nature for Water”. UN-Water issues the annual World Water Development Report, which addresses the theme. This year’s report is entitled “Nature-Based Solutions for Water”, to which FAO has contributed a chapter.
