The Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) was established at the first Plenary Assembly of the Global Soil Partnership held at FAO Headquarters on 11 and 12 of June, 2013.

The ITPS is composed of 27 top soil experts representing all the regions of the world. The main function of the ITPS is to provide scientific and technical advice and guidance on global soil issues to the Global Soil Partnership primarily and to specific requests submitted by global or regional institutions. The ITPS will advocate for addressing sustainable soil management in the different sustainable development agendas.

Introduction

Water plays a crucial role from production to consumption of food value chain that is the biggest consumer of water. Out of total water consumption in the food value chain, 80 % is utilized during the production stage and the remaining 20% during the post-harvest supply chain. Given the specificities of the eastern European and Eurasian GSP members, a sub-regional soil partnership within the ESP was created covering the Eurasian sub-Region and chaired by the Russian Federation. The 13 countries composing the Eurasian Soil Partnership are the following: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkey, Tukmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
