Soil salinization is one of the major types of soil degradation identified in the Eurasian region that hampers sustainable development and the achievement of food security. In order to address this and increase the sustainable management of saline soils, coordinated efforts are needed between different stakeholders and countries in the region. This includes the need to master advanced technologies and sharing accumulated experience in managing saline soils for wider application to not only manage saline soils, but also prevent soil salinization.

The thirteenth session of the UNCCD Conference of the Parties (COP 13) will be held at Ordos International Convention and Exhibition Center, Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China from 6-16 September 2017. Its high-level segment is scheduled on 11 and 12 September 2017. FAO will be a major participant at the Conference, organizing, co-organizing, and actively participating in a number of events, on a wide ranging number of topics.

The Coping with Water Scarcity in Agriculture: A Global Framework for Action in a changing Climate was officially launched during the COP22 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Marrakesh, Morocco, in November 2016. The Global Framework has been proposed to respond to the increasingly urgent issues of water scarcity It seeks to catalyze international cooperation on water scarcity in agriculture in the context of climate change and growing competition for water resources.
