WORLDPOP: High Resolution Age-structured Population Distribution Maps

The WorldPop project provides high-resolution, open-access and contemporary data on human population distributions, allowing accurate measurement of local population distributions, compositions, characteristics, growth and dynamics, across national and regional scales. WorldPop provides high-resolution gridded estimates for population, age structure, dependency ratios at continental scale for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia at 1 km resolution. Moreover very-high-resolution estimates are available of numbers of people, residing in each 100x100m grid cell for every low- and middle-income country of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Oceania for the periods 2000, 2010 and 2020. WorldPop also produces very-high-resolution (100 m) estimates of births and pregnancies for all African countries, 22 countries in Asia and 2 countries (Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands )in Oceania, of urban change in 16 countries in Asia and 10 in Oceania. High-resolution (300 m – 1 km) estimates are available on development/health indicators (poverty, maternal and newborn health, literacy, contraceptive use and stunting) for selected countries, mostly in Africa.

GIS software, commercial or public-access, is needed for data visualization at the highest resolutions and further processing.
