Join the Celebration of the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms, 12 July, 13:00-15:00 pm (CEST)

In the context of the growing need for global and regional cooperation to manage and mitigate the effects of Sand and Dust Storms (SDS), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), as the current chair of the UN Coalition to combat SDS, is organizing an international webinar to commemorate the International Day of Combating SDS on 12 July from 13:00 to 15:00 pm (CEST).

Given the transboundary nature of SDS with numerous impacts on human health, food security, transportation, energy and the environment, the rise in the frequency and intensity of SDS in some parts of the world is of growing international concern. It is estimated that about two billion tonnes of dust enter the atmosphere annually, affecting over 150 countries on all continents, and threatening the achievement of 11 out of 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals and associated targets.

The international webinar, will see the participation of representatives of countries that are adversely impacted by SDS. It aims to raise awareness on the importance of combating sand and dust storms for human health and well-being, promote sustainable land and water management, enhancing food security and resilience to climate change and sustainable livelihoods. The UN Coalition members will present the progress in combating the sources and adverse impacts of SDS regarding adaptation and mitigation, forecasting and early warning, health and safety, policy and governance, mediation and regional collaboration. In addition, lessons learned and good practices will be shared at various levels (global to local) to combat SDS among countries and partners.
