FAO at the World Water Week 2024.

From 25 to 29 August, experts will gather in Stockholm for the global annual conference on water.


The 2024 edition of the World Water Week will focus on water cooperation, for peace and security in its broadest sense. The theme “Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future” challenges us to recognize the regional and global interconnectivity of communities and nations, and highlights the collaborative efforts needed to achieve a peaceful and sustainable future. 

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is convening technical sessions in collaboration with global and country partners, focusing on water management, agriculture and food security, as catalysts for lasting peace and stability.

SUNDAY 25 AUGUST 2024

Can water for food help peaceful outcomes? (First part)

Online session

Featuring high level experts and officials, this session presents the current state of water insecurity and food and nutrition security, at the intersection with peace and human-wellbeing. A human rights perspective is introduced to elevate water for food as a priority in establishing human security and peace.

Enhancing resilience through indigenous crops for food security and nutrition

Onsite (A2, Level 6) & online session

Indigenous or forgotten crops are emerging as opportunity crops to cope with water scarcity in agriculture, in additiona to their other benefits. Cabo Verde, Malawi, Morocco and South Sudan have agreed to collaborate in building resilience to persistent droughts that affect them, with the support of FAO as a pilot phase.

 

MONDAY 26 AUGUST 2024

Building bridges between communities and states through water tenure

Onsite (C1, Level 2) & online session

Tenure-based approaches to water governance provide actionable guidance to safeguard the rights of all water users, particularly vulnerable populations. This session explores global, national, and local perspectives on the assessment and application of water tenure approaches, and the engagement of local actors in the Global Dialogue on Water Tenure.

 

TUESDAY 27 AUGUST 2024

Can water for food help peaceful outcomes? (Second part)

Onsite session (Room 26, Level 2)

Achieving peace through initiatives in water for food and nutrition require actions by multiple actors, sectors and disciplines. This session presents frameworks and tools to coordinate initiatives across communities, private entities, global and local organizations, and public agencies, addressing the complexity of water for food in fragile areas.

 

WEDNESDAY 28 AUGUST 2024

The Data Speaks: Status update of SDG 6

Onsite (C4, Level 2) & online session

This event will present the results of the integrated process of collecting country data on the SDG 6 global indicators in 2023. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss results and lessons learned with UN custodian agencies and country representatives and their implications for policymaking and acceleration toward achieving SDG 6.

Onsite (C3, Level 2) & online session

Water, food and nutrition intersect with development pathways to achieve peaceful outcomes. In this session, presenters from different regions will share experiences and cases that represent peace at multiple scales, from household to community to landscape to national levels.

 

THURSDAY 29 AUGUST 2024

A guideline for assessing Ecosystem-based Solutions in agriculture

Onsite (C4, Level 2) & online session

Explore the effectiveness of Agricultural Ecosystem-based Solutions in mitigating land and water degradation while enhancing food and water security. The workshop introduces a tool with quantifiable indicators and qualitative measures, offering participants a comprehensive understanding of planning and effectively monitoring ecosystem-based solutions in agriculture.

Countries and Partners step up collaboration towards resilient agrifood systems

Onsite (C1, Level 2) & online session

In a landmark High-Level Dialogue convened by FAO on 29-30 April 2024, and in response to a looming water crisis caused by climate change, countries and other partners have agreed to step up collaboration for resilient agrifood systems through the Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG).
