Monitoring and Reporting of SDG 6.4 target (water use and scarcity) in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs)
FAO hosted a workshop on SDG 6.4 target (water use and scarcity) in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) from 18-20 July.
As the custodian agency for SDG indicators 6.4.1 and 6.4.2, FAO supports the efforts of the countries in monitoring target 6.4 on water use and scarcity. This is done through AQUASTAT, FAO’s global water and agriculture information system. AQUASTAT data is obtained through a network of national correspondents who compile a questionnaire including all data necessary for the calculation of SDG target indicators.
Objectives of the workshop
The specific objectives of the workshop were:
- Improving the understanding of the methodologies for the computation of the indicators of the SDG target 6.4 and discuss their implementation at country level.
- Strengthening the engagement and collaboration of national institutions for the monitoring and global reporting of SDG 6.4. and water data collection.
- Describing the SDG 6.4 data collection, monitoring and reporting process of FAO through the AQUASTAT information system.
- Presenting the tools made available by AQUASTAT and IMI-SDG6 to support countries in the monitoring the SDG indicators, particularly for target 6.4.
- Defining the steps to be undertaken in order to improve the quality, quantity and timing of the data collected and reported by countries.
- Discussing the institutional arrangements needed for the implementation of the SDG monitoring system.
- Promoting a cross-country dialogue to improve the monitoring, reporting and dissemination of SDG 6.4
- Discussing the use of SDG 6.4. indicators and other water indicators to inform policies and the decision making process.
Results
At the end of the workshop, participants had:
- A better understanding of the SDG framework and reporting process.
- Improved knowledge of methodologies for the evaluation of indicators 6.4.1 and 6.4.2.
- Improved understanding of SDG 6.4 indicators and their potential use in policies or water strategies.
- Agreed work plan for the continuous improvement of the collection of water data and the calculation of the indicators.
Participants
The workshop was addressed to AQUASTAT national correspondents and experts from Cabo Verde, Sao Tomé and Principe, Comoros, Madagascar and Mauritania.
