International Symposium: WOCAT and the role of Sustainable Land Management in contributing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

On June 13th 2017 the International Symposium WOCAT and the role of Sustainable Land Management in contributing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals aims at bringing together SLM specialists, advisors and decision-makers at various levels from all over the world and particularly from the Latin America and Caribbean region to share their learning on  SLM knowledge with regard to how it can contribute to the SDGs, to global environmental conventions as well as address relevant issues such as water scarcity and climate change and their relevance to food and agriculture.

The one-day Symposium hosted by CIAT will bring together WOCAT consortium partners and SLM specialists, advisors and decision-makers from different parts of the world and particularly from Latin America for share experiences and learning four main topics: 

  • Topic 1: Challenges and opportunities for scaling up SLM practices in contribution to achieving the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda
  • Topic 2: Use of SLM tools and methods of WOCAT and others in local, national and regional programmes for achieving the SDGs
  • Topic 3: Success stories of knowledge-based decision-making in SLM using tools and methods from the WOCAT network and other actors, contributing to achieving the SDGs
  • Topic 4: Special focus Latin America: Promotion and achievement of SLM through the application of SLM tools and methods of WOCAT and others with emphasis to strengthen partnerships

The WOCAT Symposium will be followed by a Field day, organized by CIAT, to showcase SLM implementation and the application of WOCAT tools and methods in the surroundings of Cali (Wednesday, 14 June). This is expected give participants an opportunity to look and discuss several successful land use and land management practices (SLM) and the value and application for land users and decision makers of WOCAT tools and methods.to assess, document and map SLM technologies and approaches and how they are adapted to Climate Change.

The 18th WOCAT Network Meeting (WNM) on 15 and 16 June will then take up the key outcomes from the Symposium and develop these further as well as to elaborate new and further developments of tools and methods, partnerships, progress and directions for the way forward among new and long-term national, regional and international members and partners of the WOCAT Network.

Finally the 6th WOCAT Steering Committee meeting on 17-18 June will issue a press release on 17th June World Day to Combat Desertification developed by WOCAT consortium partners and network members to showcase the relevance of the WOCAT partnership for Knowledge Management and Capacity Development on Sustainable Land Management in local, national and regional programmes for addressing desertification, land degradation and drought in the face of climate change and for contributing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
