FAOR Mr. Nasar Hayat handed over agriculture input to farming households in Savannakhet province

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is implementing “Increasing resilience to food and nutrition insecurity through building back better flood-affected agriculture livelihoods in Lao PDR” project with support from the Government of Japan to support rehabilitation of the  farmers affected by floods in Savannakhet provinces by providing technical assistance, crops and aquaculture inputs as well to most affected poor farming households to support their rehabilitation.

One of the activities under the project is distribution of fish fingerlings to the farmers for their fish ponds and communities for community ponds for restoration of community fish production in the target villages.  Mr. Nasar Hayat, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to the Lao PDR joined the District Governor of Xaybouly, district to hand over 728,000 fingerlings to 671 affected households and 47 communities in 10 target districts of Savannakhet province. Nasar remarked, “This project has three key activities that includedistribution of rice seeds, fingerlings and vegetable seeds aiming at restoration of food and livelihood activities of affected farmers. Fish is one of the main source of protein and rehabilitation of livelihood. He emphasized on building resilience of farming communities so that they are able to face similar unfortunate events in future”

The event was attended by Mr. Bounyang Chanliyavong, Governor of Xaybouly district, Mr. Khamchan Sidavong, Deputy General Director of PAFO and other officials of DAFO as well as other representatives were from FAO Laos, DOLF and farming households from Dongyang, Kangpa, Huayhea and Somsaat villges.
