Breakfast coffee conversation: Legal innovation for wildlife, communities and forests

FAO headquarters - Atrium 24/07/2024 24/07/2024

Join us from 8:45 to 9:30 for a conversation on an innovative legal initiative that is driving transformative change for sustainable wildlife management

The event will explore the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme's comprehensive, nationally owned, and community-based approach. The SWM Programme emphasises the importance of creating policies and legislation that address the diverse needs of all stakeholders, especially Indigenous Peoples and rural communities.

Attendees will discover the SWM Programme's Legal Hub, a pioneering online platform providing accessible legal resources, information and analysis. Since its launch in 2021, the Legal Hub has 89+ triggered and informed legal reforms, and supported policymakers, scientists, and civil society organizations in numerous countries.

Hear from the Republic of Congo's Forest Economy Minister and a Democratic Republic of Congo's Secretary-General as they discuss the practical applications of the Legal Hub, whist three FAO directors will share insights on this collaborative FAO initiative and how the innovative aspects are being documented.

Objectives

  • Present the key aspects of the SWM Programme's multi-sectoral approach, with a focus on legal analysis as a catalyst for policy and law reforms.
  • Discuss the value and impact of the Legal Hub to trigger/inform participatory reforms in the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Explain the importance of documenting innovations within the FAO science and innovation strategy to transform agrifood systems.
