Steering Committee meeting, West Africa Regional Strategic Framework and Action Plan to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing

25/04/2022 29/04/2022

The West Africa region has for the last several decades been dogged by various forms of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.  Whilst IUU practices are well known, they are not well studied and so reliable estimates of magnitude and impact are lacking. The States of the region have taken steps to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing through a unified approach, with the support of national institutions, regional and international organizations and partners, including the FAO. The efforts have led to the development of a draft regional strategic framework and action plan on IUU fishing. This draft regional strategic framework and action plan is structured into general provisions, structural arrangements for implementation, and 39 recommended action points organised thematically into four sections – policy and legal frameworks, operations, monitoring, control and surveillance and enforcement, information exchange and capacity development.

A meeting to discuss the draft regional strategic framework and action plan developed in consultation with colleagues, will take place, at the end of which an agreed draft will be presented to the stakeholders.
