Latin American and Caribbean Parliament adopts Model Law on the prevention and reduction of food loss and waste

12/04/2022

At its 36th Ordinary Assembly on 11 February 2022, the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) adopted the Model Law for the prevention and reduction of food loss and waste. This model law was drafted with the technical assistance of the Development Law Service (LEGN) in the context of a project supporting the “Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean without hunger”

Food loss and waste affect the realization of the human right to adequate food and the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly those targets of SDG 12 which cover responsible production and consumption. The United Nations estimates that globally about 14 percent of food produced is lost (SOFA 2019), while 17 percent is wasted (UNEP 2021). In Latin America and the Caribbean, 220 million tons of food are lost each year.

LEGN's technical assistance centred upon the findings and recommendations of its study "Legislative advances on the prevention and reduction of food loss and waste in Latin America and the Caribbean" (Available in Spanish only), and on the recommendations of the Voluntary Code of Conduct for the Reduction of Food Loss and Waste. It is worth mentioning that the Model Law (text available in Spanish only) is the first of its kind that incorporates the latter.
