La Paz, Plurinational State of Bolivia

On 25 July 2024, a seminar on “Parliamentary support for public policies on the right to food and agrifood systems, with a gender perspective” was organized by the FAO Representation in Bolivia, in collaboration with the Project to Support the Latin America and the Caribbean Without Hunger 2025 Initiative.

The purpose of this event was to train national Senators who are members of the Parliamentary Front against Hunger on various issues related to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 2 “Zero Hunger”.

In this context, Manuela Cuvi, of the FAO Development Law Service, delivered a presentation on the importance of food security and right to food legislation, particularly in relation to food loss and waste (FLW). The presentation covered issues for consideration when developing legislation, the manner in which FLW affects food security and the right to food and the different types of legislation in Latin America.

According to the most recent data, 13.2 percent of available food is lost worldwide (FAO, 2023); in turn, 19 percent of total food production is wasted (UNEP, 2024). Consequently, almost one third of food available for human consumption is lost or wasted globally.

FAO is available to provide technical assistance to its Members on food security and FLW issues. In particular, LEGN can contribute in supporting the drafting or modification of legislation in this area, as well as in capacity building.
