CITES Expert Meeting

17-18 February 2020: An experts meeting on the Next Steps for Implementing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) through fisheries legal frameworks was held at FAO’s headquarters, as part of the collaboration between the Development Law Service (LEGN) of FAO’s Legal Office, FAO’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Department (FI) and the Secretariat of CITES. This meeting was a follow-up to an experts workshop held in May 2019 (see further details here). LEGN presented a paper entitled ‘A Guidance Document on Implementing CITES through national fisheries legal frameworks: Study and Guide’. The discussions were facilitated by LEGN, FI, international fisheries law experts and representatives from the CITES Secretariat, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) and the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT).
