07/10/2022

On 5th and 6th of October 2022, the Regional Conference on Food Loss and Waste Reduction in Europe and Central Asia took place in a hybrid modality in Istanbul (Türkiye) and webcasted for public viewing. The Conference aimed to contribute to identifying essential elements of an enabling environment, as well as tools, including legislative and business innovations, strategies for reducing food loss and waste (FLW), and practical interventions, to support the transition to sustainable food value chains.

The FAO Development Law Service (LEGN) showed how legal and policy frameworks are key enablers to achieve long lasting changes. LEGN used the guidance provided by the Voluntary Code of Conduct for Food Loss and Waste Reduction and presented a set of concrete measures that policy makers can adopt to strengthen their national legal frameworks to reduce food loss and waste (FLW) and achieve SDG 12.3. It also showcased its recently published Legal Brief No. 9 on  Enabling a legal environment for the prevention and reduction of food loss and waste. FAO, 2022. Pasarin, V. and Viinikainen, T. Legal Brief No. 9. The presentation also highlighted the support that the Development Law Service, together with FAO’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, have been providing in the region. Following a participatory approach and relying on national legal expertise, this work has analysed the relevance of existing national legal frameworks to FLW reduction and prevention and has contributed to the overall goal of national strategy and legislative development.

The Conference was jointly organized by FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye and the Economic Cooperation Organization Regional Coordination Centre for Food Security ECO-RCCFS, with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of The Netherlands, under the FAO-Türkiye Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture FTPP-II funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of the Republic of Türkiye.
