New Law on Organic Production in Kyrgyzstan

29/03/2023

The Government of the Kyrgyz Republic recently adopted a Law on Organic Production. This represents a major achievement in supporting transformative and sustainable agri-food systems.

This Law is the result of a long-term, participatory law-making process supported by the Development Law Service (LEGN) of FAO’s Legal Office. In its role as a technical legal unit, LEGN assisted the country in strengthening the capabilities of public and private sectors to develop legislation on organic production.

In addition, LEGN, in coordination with the FAO Country Office, provided assistance to the Legal Working Group and the Department of Organic Agriculture to address feedback during the parliamentary approval process. For the purpose of improving the law's quality and buy-in, FAO participated in meetings with key national stakeholders to ensure that it was tailored to the national context and reflected the interests of the country.

It was LEGN's privilege to assist the Government of Kyrgyzstan in the drafting of this very topical law.
