Gender-Lex Now in Spanish: Empowering Women in Agrifood Systems

07/01/2025

Gender-Lex, a groundbreaking legal database designed to advance gender equality in agrifood systems through transformative legal frameworks, was launched in Spanish on 5 December 2024.

Gender-Lex aims to provide an in-depth view of gender-responsive national approaches embedded in sectoral legislation, providing a valuable resource for other nations seeking to develop their own policies and legislation in this area. It serves as a vital knowledge resource on the critical role of transformative legal frameworks in advancing gender equality worldwide.

At the launch events, which also took place in French and English, policy-makers, legal experts, development partners, and other stakeholders discussed the key factors that contribute to the effectiveness of public policies and laws in eliminating gender discrimination in agrifood systems, as well as the challenges faced in achieving these goals.

The panelists agreed on the importance of dialogue and public consultation. María Fernanda Maldonado, Director General of the Secretariat of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, emphasized the importance of public consultation, highlighting the need to gather "the concerns and proposals of rural women at the territorial level" to design efficient policies that address their needs. In addition, Luz Haro, Executive Secretary of the Network of Rural Women of Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasized the importance of investing in rural women and girls’ education, recognizing them as "guardians and caretakers of life, of the forest, of nature, of water, of natural resources, of seeds, and of healthy food."
