Fourth and Fifth Online Regional Workshops on the use of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Legal Diagnostic Tool

07/05/2021

In February and April 2021, the fourth and fifth online regional workshops on the use of A diagnostic tool for implementing an ecosystem approach to fisheries through policy and legal frameworks (EAF Legal Diagnostic Tool) were held, on Zoom, as part of the collaboration between LEGN, the Marine and Inland Fisheries Branch of FAO (NFIFM) and the EAF-Nansen Programme.

About 42 representatives from the national fisheries authorities of seven French-speaking countries (Cameroon, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, and Mauritius) participated in the fourth workshop, and about 27 representatives from national fisheries authorities of six Portuguese-speaking countries (Angola, Cabo Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé e Príncipe) participated in the fifth workshop. Participants were trained on how to use the EAF Legal Diagnostic Tool, which complements the How-to Guide on Legislating for an EAF and provides an EAF Legal Checklist for assessing the alignment of a country’s relevant legal and policy framework with an EAF. Participants interacted in plenary discussions as well as in practical group exercises, clarifying questions and discussing policy and legal issues, worked with the EAF Legal Checklist and brainstormed on how to fill in the EAF Implementation Roadmap.

Preliminary assessments of the alignment of selected policy and legal instruments of such countries with an EAF are being finalised by LEGN. These EAF Legal Reports will eventually be published. as joint-products with the national governments, after their official approval and endorsement. This workshop was part of the series: 2nd and 3rd Online Workshops; 1st Online Workshop; and  Mock Training.
