Newly released: Legal brief on preventing and reducing food loss and waste

29/09/2022

On the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, the FAO Development Law Service (LEGN) has released a legal brief on Enabling a legal environment for the prevention and reduction of food loss and waste. This comes hot on the heels of LEGN’s previous legal brief on the same topic, which was aimed at parliamentarians in Latina America and Caribbean: “Legislating to prevent and reduce food loss and waste”. The new brief expands the scope to cover global considerations on the role legislation can play in the fight against food loss and waste (FLW).

FLW is a global burden that negatively impacts the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. Continuing the international efforts aimed at reducing FLW, and aligned with the Voluntary Code of Conduct for Food Loss and Waste Reduction, FAO's Development Law Service offers in this legal brief concrete regulatory measures states can adopt to enhance the effectiveness of their national legal frameworks in preventing and reducing FLW

The selected regulatory measures include the establishment of institutional mechanisms for coordination of action, clearly defining roles and responsibilities among all stakeholders involved, and setting binding goals for the reduction of FLW.
