FAO Signs Landmark Agreements to Boost Cashew and Honey Production in Liberia

17/09/2024

Monrovia: In a significant move towards enhancing climate resilience and improving livelihoods, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has signed two crucial Letters of Agreement (LoAs) with the Liberia Cashew Development Association (LCDA) and the Association of Beekeeper Liberia (ABEL). This initiative falls under Phase II of the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) Program, focusing on ‘Climate Resilient Landscapes and Improved Livelihoods.’

The agreements aim to empower cashew and honey producers in Nimba, Bomi, and Gbarpolu counties, positioning them as key change agents for climate-resilient landscapes and enhanced economic opportunities.

Under the new LoA, the LCDA will receive comprehensive support to strengthen its organizational capacity and improve cashew production. Key initiatives include Strategic Development: The LCDA will develop a five-year strategic plan to guide its activities and growth, Sub-Association Strengthening: Four sub-cashew associations will be established and reinforced in Bomi and Gbarpolu counties, Educational Programs: Members will receive extensive education on advanced cashew farming techniques, aimed at enhancing alternative livelihoods and boosting income, and Nursery Development: Four nursery sites will be created, containing a total of 40,000 cashew seedlings. These seedlings will be distributed to members to enhance productivity and climate resilience.

Simultaneously, the agreement with ABEL is designed to elevate the skills and market presence of local beekeepers.

The support will focus on Training Programs: Executives and members will undergo training in organizational governance, financial management, improved beekeeping practices, hive management, and quality honey testing and harvesting. These programs will be conducted in two districts in Nimba County. Product Development: Three honey-value-added products will be developed to increase market access.
