DescriptionPublished data on the volume of soybeans and maize shipped through the countrys northern export corridors, showing a year-on-year increase of 80 percent (or 51.2 million tonnes) for 2017.
NotesAccording to data published by Brazils national agency for waterway transportation, ANTAQ, the volume of soybeans and maize shipped through the countrys northern export corridors (known as Arco Norte) reached 51.2 million tonnes in 2017 posting a year-on-year increase of 80 percent. Growing reliance of Centre-West grain-producing states on barge terminals in the Amazon Basin and seaports along the countrys Northern coast is said to go hand in hand with a decongestion in the countrys traditional southbound routes. Reportedly, last year, the Arco Norte accounted for 41 percent of Brazils combined soybean and maize shipments compared to only 23 percent in 2010. After heavy industry investments, about 60 percent of Arco Nortes total shipping capacity is reported to be in the hands of private companies. (See also MPPU June, July, Aug. Sep. Oct.
