DescriptionApproved a disease-resistant gene-edited wheat variety. Unlike genetic modification, which introduces foreign genes into a plant, gene editing alters existing genes in a bid to improve a plant\'s performance. China also issued a safety certificate for its genetically modified maize, which is resistant to herbicides and insects, as well as one higher yielding gene-edited maize variety. The approvals are valid for five years beginning on 5 May and allow for the new varieties to be released commercially.
