Drought conditions curbs cereal production, adding upward pressure on prices
2023

Prolonged drought conditions since August 2022 have severely affected the country's 2022 wheat production and are expected to curb the 2023 maize output, currently being harvested. The decline in cereal production will likely affect farmers’ livelihoods and exert additional upward pressure on the already high prices, further constraining access to food for the most vulnerable households.

Dramatic increase in acute food insecurity due to the ongoing conflict

The eruption of armed conflict in the country has severely affected the availability of, and access to, food, against a backdrop of persisting macroeconomic challenges and frequent episodes of intercommunal violence. The food security situation has dramatically worsened since the start of the conflict, with about 19.9 million people estimated to require emergency food and livelihood assistance during the June–September lean season.

International prices of wheat and maize declined in April 2023 while rice prices increased. Ample supplies, strong export competition and generally favourable crop conditions in the European Union weighed on wheat prices, while ongoing harvests in South America underpinned the decline in maize prices. El Niño oceanographic phenomenon forecast to return in June 2023, following three years of La Niña. Dry weather conditions are expected in key cropping areas of Central America, Southern Africa and Far East Asia, while excessive rainfall and possible flooding are foreseen in Near East Asia and East Africa.
