The overall goal of the dialogue is to encourage concrete actions on commitments made by the UN body and the South African Government to advance the food system transformation agenda in South Africa.
Within this context, the objective of discussions will be to explore market opportunities for sorghum, as a means of supporting South Africa’s food system transformation. Five practical questions will be addressed.
1. What is the relevance of indigenous systems and food crops, particularly sorghum, to the food system transformation agenda?
2. Is there demand at-scale?
3. Is there supply at-scale?
4. What are key issues faced in aligning demand and supply markets for sorghum and sorghum-based products?
5. What should be done to unblock pathways to ensure sustainable demand and supply markets for sorghum (and other indigenous food crops), to contribute to South Africa’s food system objectives?
Discussions will be guided, in part, by the 2021 “Study to Establish Market Opportunities for Sorghum in South Africa.”
