Mongolia celebrates International Day of Forests

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. This year we celebrate under the theme “Forests and Education”.

As part of the celebration, national forum “Policy, science and technology in Forestry sector” was successfully organized for the fourth year in partnership with Ministry of Environment and Tourism, National University of Mongolia, UN REDD Programme and FAO. During the forum, Mr. Vinod Ahuja, FAOR in Mongolia presented The State of Forests and Forestry in Asia and the Pacific and its latest findings to students, researchers and professionals in the sector.

Also, within the framework of celebrating IDF 2019 under the theme “Forest and Education”, FAO Mongolia and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism launched the DISCOVERING FORESTS learning and teaching guidelines translated into Mongolian with the support of GEF funded  Mainstreaming biodiversity conservation, SFM and carbon sink enhancement into Mongolia`s productive forest landscapes project and UN REDD Mongolia programme. The booklets have been developed by FAO in 2018 for children between the ages of 10-13.

FAO Mongolia office will organize a public hiking event with UB hiking club and Ministry of Environment and Tourism on 24March, 2019.
