The Parliament of Mongolia has decided to approve the revised Law on Seeds and Plant Varieties during its fall session on October 15, 2021. Remarkably, the law has been approved on the day before of World Food Day. The key issue of sustainable agricultural development and high yields is to create resistant plant varieties, to plant seeds of varieties adapted to the region, to improve the quality and supply of seeds. In other words, this law has geopolitical importance. The purpose of this law is to regulate issues related to supporting the development of the sector of crop seeds, stimulating research and innovation in the seed sector, establishing fair trade of seeds, protection and sustainable use of plant genetic resources, creation of new plant varieties, protection of breeder's rights and ensuring food safety.

The law will support the development of advanced varieties resistant to drought, heat, disease and pests, allow farmers to cultivate certified seeds of varieties adapted to the local characteristics, increase farmers' incomes and contribute to sustainable agricultural development. Overall, it plays an essential role in ensuring the food security of the country.

FAO has cooperated with MoFALI for developing the Law on Seeds and Plant Varieties under the SDC financial support.
