Mountain Photography Biennale in Jelenia Góra

Muzeum Karkonoskie, Jelenia Góra, Poland
From: 07.09.2024 to: 07.09.2024

The Mountain Photography Biennale in Jelenia Góra is not only Poland's longest-running mountain photography competition, with a tradition spanning 44 years, but also one of the most significant and widely recognized events of its kind in the country. The competition is organized by the Jelenia Góra Cultural Centre in collaboration with the Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Góra.

The Biennale is a multifaceted event that unfolds across several dimensions. At its core, it is a competition that attracts numerous artists from Poland and abroad, generating substantial interest. The competition is inclusive, welcoming any photography enthusiast passionate about mountain landscapes. The technique used is irrelevant; the awarded works may exemplify superb craftsmanship in both black-and-white and colour photography, including digital prints. The focus is on the quality of the photography rather than the technique employed.

In addition to the competition, the Biennale features individual exhibitions by contemporary photographers recognized for their contributions to mountain photography, as well as historical exhibitions on the subject. These are presented in the halls of the Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Góra. The event also includes meetings and seminars that foster dialogue among creative circles and explore various aspects of mountain photography.

This year's 23rd edition of the Biennale culminates in an exhibition at the Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Góra, showcasing over 200 photographs by 76 authors, selected by the competition jury from 608 works submitted by 89 artists. The awards gala will be held during the exhibition opening at the Karkonosze Museum on 6 September 2024. On the following day, 7 September 2024, the museum will host a symposium on mountain photography, featuring esteemed scientists and artists renowned for their achievements in this field.

The Karkonosze Museum is a member of the International Mountain Museums Alliance, which is supported by the Mountain Partnership.
